Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Spain left-back Marc Cucurella from Chelsea in a deal worth €55m plus €5m in add-ons. Here's the fee, the six-year contract, and why this is José Mourinho's signing.
Real Madrid have confirmed the signing of Spain and Chelsea left-back Marc Cucurella in a deal worth €55 million plus a further €5 million in add-ons — a package that can rise to €60m (£51.8m). The 27-year-old has agreed a six-year contract that runs until June 2032, with the transfer set to be completed once the 2026 World Cup is over.
The move is a statement signing for José Mourinho, who returns to the Real Madrid bench and made a new left-back his priority this summer. Madrid moved decisively to beat Barcelona and Manchester City to Cucurella, with Mourinho keen to add a proven, combative defender to his back line.
David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano broke news of the agreement on 14 June, with Madrid having reached a full verbal agreement with both Chelsea and the player before the club made it official a day later. The fee is structured as a €55m guaranteed payment plus €5m in performance-related add-ons.
Cucurella is a product of Barcelona's La Masia academy who built his reputation at Getafe and Brighton before joining Chelsea from the latter for around £56m in 2022 — at the time one of the highest fees ever paid for a left-back. He went on to become one of the Premier League's most dependable full-backs.
His exit leaves Chelsea short of senior options on the left as they reshape a squad that endured an underwhelming 2025-26 campaign. Cucurella, for his part, pushed to make the move and was keen to settle his club future before heading into the World Cup.
There is a twist to the deal. Cucurella, a Barcelona academy graduate, had once joked that he would sooner shave off his trademark curls than play for Real Madrid — making the switch a striking turnaround for a player whose roots lie with Los Blancos' fiercest rivals.
Cucurella is currently in the United States with the Spain squad for the 2026 World Cup, where Luis de la Fuente's side open against Cape Verde. The transfer will be formally wrapped up after the tournament, and is expected to be the first of several summer additions as Mourinho reshapes his squad.
