FC Barcelona have agreed a deal worth up to €70 million (£69.3m) to sign Newcastle United and England winger Anthony Gordon. The 25-year-old is set to undergo a medical before completing one of the summer's first marquee transfers.
Because Barcelona cannot pay the fee up front, the transfer is being structured across four to five years. The package — around €70m including add-ons — was acceptable to Newcastle, who were reluctant to sell but viewed the offer as a strong one to help fund their summer rebuild.
Barcelona beat Bayern Munich and Liverpool to Gordon's signature. Bayern pushed hard for the winger and Liverpool retained an interest, but Gordon was keen on a move to Catalonia and personal terms were settled quickly.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reported that Barcelona reached a full agreement with Gordon on personal terms before direct club-to-club talks with Newcastle finalised the fee. Barcelona were eager to wrap the deal up before the 2026 World Cup, having lost time chasing Athletic Club's Nico Williams in the two previous windows.
The signing casts doubt over Marcus Rashford's future at Barcelona. Rashford, who scored 14 goals and provided 14 assists on loan from Manchester United this season, and Gordon both prefer the left of the attack — the same flank occupied by Raphinha. Barcelona hold an option to make Rashford's move permanent for €30m.
Club sources insist the Gordon deal is unrelated to Barcelona's separate search for a striker to replace the departing Robert Lewandowski, with Atlético Madrid's Julián Álvarez and Chelsea's João Pedro among the names under consideration.
Gordon nearly joined Liverpool in 2024 in a proposed £75m deal that collapsed; he instead signed a new Newcastle contract and went on to score 17 goals in 46 appearances last season.
Gordon is expected to travel for his medical and sign imminently, with the move set to be confirmed in the coming days.
